Hi Everyone! I am so happy to have found a place where I can get back to where I came from. My parents used to own a Dairy farm in Turlock. I am a Portuguese (Azores) Dairyman's daughter. Yes, I am very...ok...a little proud of that. LOL! I have for several years, tried to get back to growing the large garden (like my grandfather grew) in my small backyard. I miss being on the farm...feeding the pigs...collecting the eggs...and growing the veggies. I hope by being a part of this community, I can muster up the courage to move back to the country.

Even if I don't....I'll live vicariously through you.

Thanks for letting me part of this wonderful group.
Susan

Hello Everyone!!!

I finally got a new computer! Ok so here is what I have done in the garden over the last month.

Rototilled the garden area. Only half was with my rototiller...because it broke. The other half I had to do by hand...Yes I've got blisters and sore hands. But I did it!!!! I started peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, broccoli, some flowers and basil. The peas and broccoli have sprouted and are in the ground. I haven't gotten the tomatoes to sprout yet...maybe I need to move the greenhouse...not sur… Continue

Forgive me for not posting!

I have a sick computer. Therefore, I am unable to get on the computer for too long. I just wanted you all to know I haven't forgotten.

I set up our greenhouse last week and I do have photos of that. I also started some seed (broccoli, tomatoes, peas) and I will start some more in the next week.

We are getting our new computer in about 2 weeks. I will do a recap of what I have done ( with pictures) at that time. I just can't wait!!!

Hang in there!

I know....I'm two weeks late in posting!

Well, I have sat down to type this out about 5 times....and then life happens. So here goes!

Below are pictures of my current garden. There are only three things growing. Swiss Chard, Brussels Sprouts and Celery. I planted the last two on Jan 2nd. And they have had some growth...not much though. I also planted my green pea seeds on that day. Little did I realize that the temp would not yet stay above 40 degrees. So, I might have to try planting again in two weeks. The weather has been so GREAT… Continue

Creating a Veggie Garden plan

It's that time again! I usually start getting my thoughts together for my veggie garden.

I read an article recently about only using "untreated Heirloom" seeds, especially when growing corn. :Toxic pollen from genetically-modified corn is killing the monarch butterflies. Greenpeace reports that tests done on rats fed with genetically engineered corn proved the feed to be toxic to the rat's liver and kidneys". I wonder what it is doing to ours? I also read that the FDA says that 40% ofContinue

Like what? I know when we go camping we burn wood, then when it's glowing red and not flaming anymore, we grill steaks over it. Yum.

My winter garden is usually better than my summer garden. In the summer it's too hot to go out and weed! It's buggy out there, and I have gophers. So I only have a so-so summer garden, but my winter garden is better. I'm planting NOW (early Sept)...
