Is water the new oil?

Special report by Juliette Jowit
The Observer, Sunday November 2 2008

Wadi Faynan, Jordan: This Palestinian Beduin Family of 11 live in the desert. They collect their water from the waterpipes and manage to get 15 litres of water each per day.

It's hard to imagine why humans would have chosen the achingly arid stone desert of Wadi Faynan for their first settlement.… Continue

Community Land Trust Keeps Prices Affordable—For Now And Forever

by Daniel Fireside

An agenda that puts people first: Housing

New homeowners at a land trust development in the Old North End neighborhood of Burlington, Vermont. In the early 1980s, soaring housing costs were pricing longtime residents out of their own neighborhoods, and so the nation’s first municipally funded community land trust was born. Today it’s the nation’s largest, and this year it’s being honored with a prestigious U.N. World Habitat Award.

What the Chemical Industry Doesn't Want You to Know about Everyday Products

By Elaine Shannon, AlterNet

It takes a lot of nerve to go up against the $3 trillion-a-year global chemical industry.

Ask University of Missouri-Columbia scientists Frederick Vom Saal and Wade Welshons. They've been in the industry's crosshairs for more than a decade, since their experiments turned up the first hard evidence that miniscule amounts… Continue

Easy Backyard Chicken Coops

Easy Backyard Chicken Coops
Troy Griepentrog

There are dozens of reasons to keep a few hens in your back yard, including pest control and sheer entertainment. Fresh eggs may be the most popular reason, and eggs from hens allowed to do what comes naturally — roam and peck at grasses, weed seeds and bugs — not only taste better, they're better for you than eggs from cage-raised hens. Free-range eggs are higher in vitamin E and beta carotene, and lower in cholesterol. (Look for the exciting result… Continue

Hey Jeremy,

I would love for you to come visit our ranch, we don't farm, but would like to someday, just not sure what. Maybe you could help!
Right now we have a few cattle, horses, dogs, cats and many birds that love our
park-like place.

Let me know when is good for you and don't forget your beautiful family!

Just Anna

Defenders Of Wildlife in San Joaquin Valley!

Jeremy Terhune, Defenders new San Joaquin Valley Representative, has opened an office in Stockton. California’s Central Valley contains most of California’s last remaining vernal pools, wetlands and grasslands. Jeremy is working to educate and build support for the conservation of wildlife and wild places in the Central Valley by working with diverse communities and interests. He is working to protect the unique and special landscapes in the Valley, including grasslands, the Delta, and the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge. He is also working to create partnerships with private landowners, including farmers and ranchers, to provide habitat for the Valley’s birds, fish and wildlife.

Like what? I know when we go camping we burn wood, then when it's glowing red and not flaming anymore, we grill steaks over it. Yum.

My winter garden is usually better than my summer garden. In the summer it's too hot to go out and weed! It's buggy out there, and I have gophers. So I only have a so-so summer garden, but my winter garden is better. I'm planting NOW (early Sept)...
