seed starting though. Organic compost is more like an additive or side dressing or fertilizer...call it what you like. Mine is too hot to directly start seeds, young plants, etc. Your best and most successful seed medium is by ex: Miracle Grow Seed Starting potting mix. It's light and aireates the seed and within days waa laa plants. It was explained like this to me...yes dirt will work but nonsoil seed medium is like nailing a nail with a hammer and dirt is like nailing it with the heel on your shoe....it works but it's not the best. Vermiculte and sphagnum moss also works and is cheaper and gives you more volume for your money.http://www.gardeners.com/Germinating-Mix/03-199,default,pd.html This website talks about soilless seed starting. I know when we go camping we burn wood, then when it's glowing red and not flaming anymore, we grill steaks over it. Yum.
My winter garden is usually better than my summer garden. In the summer it's too hot to go out and weed! It's buggy out there, and I have gophers. So I only have a so-so summer garden, but my winter garden is better.
I'm planting NOW (early Sept)...
That's a great box, did you have plastic or glass over it in the coldest months? Or was it open all winter?

I am ready to go forth with my first winter garden! Beets, onions, and garlic oh my! I think I going to concentrate more on preparing a better space for my summer garden.
