We use to play it safe and only plant herbs in our garden. However, this summer we decided to give it a go and have successfully planted and harvested our first summer crop-tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. We are excited to grow more veggies and learn more about it! I believe it's close to the time one should prepare for the fall/winter crops? I was wondering what some of you will be growing this fall/winter?
Winter gardens have always puzzled me. I can't really say why. I think it is the association between gardening and the sun. I did try pumpkins this year. They are not doing well. They did not get enough sunlight and I just learned that they probably needed more water than I gave them. I would love to hear what people in the valley are planting in their winter gardens also.
We are just cleaning up and trying to get control of our nasty goat heads, I have lured my neighbors to my garden and they are excited to start a garden with us!
We are getting together this week-end to plan a winter garden, I will keep you posted!
Last year I started from seed a variety of lettuce from Botanicalinterests.com, I started in doors and we harvested in spring, they did really good and were super tasty!
I am ready to go forth with my first winter garden! Beets, onions, and garlic oh my! I think I going to concentrate more on preparing a better space for my summer garden.
My winter garden is usually better than my summer garden. In the summer it's too hot to go out and weed! It's buggy out there, and I have gophers. So I only have a so-so summer garden, but my winter garden is better.
I'm planting NOW (early Sept) chard, lettuce, peas, broccoli, cabbage, beets, carrots, onions, bok choy, and I'll do garlic next month. I'll also plant more peas and broccoli and lettuce in the middle ofOct. And I want to try spinach. Does anyone know when is the best time for spinach? I don't have good luck with spinach or cabbage.
